“Aging with Purpose: Impact Lives and Stay Connected”

Celebrating National Volunteer Month with Seniors

National Volunteer Month is the perfect time to celebrate the power of giving. For seniors, aging with purpose so much more than helping others. It’s a way to find joy, meet people, and feel fulfilled. Whether you’re active or prefer staying at home, there are many ways to make a difference and share what you know. Living with purpose as you age is an important part of your realization that life does still matter.

Retirement may not have been all that it is cracked up to be. After a while you may become bored with watching T.V. and living a life of leisure. Lack of thought stimulation is not good for our aging brains!

Why Volunteering Matters

It’s common to feel a little lost during life changes, like retiring or kids growing up. Volunteering can help fill that gap. Helping others gives you a strong sense of purpose. It also makes you feel connected and wards off loneliness. Studies have shown that staying socially active can keep your mind sharp, lower stress, and even help you stay healthier.

Giving back is a wonderful way to share your talents and keep learning. No matter your abilities, you can make an impact one step at a time.

We are happy to share an interview with Sue Degallier, Director of Active Aging Programs with Catholic Charities of Southern Minnesota to share how this organization helps both aging adults fulfill their need for purpose as well as assisting the family caregivers.

Ways Seniors Can Volunteer

Here are a few ideas to get started, whether you want to go out into the community or volunteer from home.

1. Be a Mentor

You have a lifetime of wisdom to share. Programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters or mentoring at a local school allow you to guide and inspire young people. Your knowledge can truly shape a life. Volunteer to be a reader at a local grade school or library.

2. Share Your Hobbies

Think about the skills or hobbies you’ve enjoyed. Are you a great cook, a musician, or a craft lover? Host classes at the local community or senior center or offer virtual lessons online. Sharing your passion can spark joy in others.

Do you have a love for gardening?  This is a great activity for aging adults. It helps the mind, body and soul!  We recently did a Live Tuesday Tips on how gardening can be a great activity for seniors.  Do you have a green thumb? Can you share your expertise with others?

3. Help Nonprofits

Many charities need extra help. You can assist with calls, emails, or writing from home. Websites like VolunteerMatch or United Way have options to explore.

4. Be a Friendly Visitor

Spend time talking to another senior or someone isolated. Some programs, like Eldera, connect seniors with children for storytelling. Others, like Meals on Wheels, involve meeting and delivering meals to neighbors in need.

5. Teach Reading and Writing

Help children or adults improve their skills by reading with them or tutoring. Programs like Reading Partners offer remote options, or you could start a neighborhood book club.

6. Try Virtual Volunteer Work

For those who prefer working from home, virtual roles are fantastic. You can answer calls for a crisis line, help with translation, or make homemade items for charity. Programs like Crisis Text Line or Be My Eyes are great to check out.

Organizations Helping Seniors Volunteer

There are wonderful programs ready to connect seniors to volunteer work. Here are a few to explore:

  • RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) does matching based on skills.
  • AARP’s Create the Good lists many flexible and fun roles.
  • Senior Corps offers options in education, public health, and more.
  • Habitat for Humanity gives seniors a chance to teach, organize, or build.

The Joy of Giving

Volunteering isn’t just about filling your time; it’s about connection and meaning. Seniors bring incredible value to their communities with wisdom, kindness, and care.

Even the smallest gesture can brighten someone’s day. Whether it’s teaching a child to play the piano or just listening to someone’s story, your effort matters.

Do what you enjoy, start with something small, and see where it leads. The opportunities are endless, and the rewards are huge.

Happy National Volunteer Month!
