“Avoid the Stress: Managing Medications During Holiday Travel”

The holidays are a time for family, travel, and celebration—but for caregivers and aging adults, they can also bring extra stress around managing medications. Running out of medication while away from home, missing doses, or facing a medical emergency in an unfamiliar place can quickly turn a joyful trip into a crisis.

Read on for this short and practical blog post this week from Pam and Linda, Your Nurse Advocates.

With a little planning, you can avoid these pitfalls and keep your loved one safe and healthy during holiday travel. Here’s how.

Here are some of the questions to consider:

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Holiday Travel: Managing Medications Edition

  1. Do I have enough of every prescription and over-the-counter medication to last my entire trip (plus a few extra days, just in case)?
  2. When was the last time I refilled my prescriptions? Am I eligible for an early refill or a 90-day supply before I leave?
  3. Have I checked my pharmacy’s holiday hours, and will I be able to contact them if I need help while away?
  4. Do I have a complete, up-to-date medication list (including dosages and prescribing doctors) packed and easily accessible?
  5. Are all my medications packed in my carry-on bag, not checked luggage?
  6. Do I have a pill organizer or another system to keep my medication schedule on track while traveling?
  7. Have I prepared an emergency folder with my medication list, doctor’s contact info, insurance cards, and advance directives?
  8. Do I know where the nearest pharmacy and urgent care/ER are at my travel destination?
  9. Have I set reminders or alarms to help me remember doses, especially if I’ll be changing time zones?
  10. Do I have a backup plan if my trip is delayed or extended—like a paper prescription or knowing how to request a refill out of state?
  11. Have I informed a trusted travel companion or family member about my medication needs and emergency plan?
  12. Do I know what to do and who to contact if I lose or run out of my medication while traveling?

Let’s address all of these questions for you. We want you to be prepared with reduced stress regarding medications during the holiday.

Why Holiday Travel Complicates Managing Medications

  • Pharmacies may have limited hours/closures
  • Insurance restrictions on early refills
  • Travel delays or weather disruptions
  • Unfamiliar healthcare providers in a new location
  • Risk of forgetting meds in the holiday rush

Special Considerations:

  • Always check medication supply before leaving town
  • Know how to get refills if you’re delayed
  • Prepare for unexpected emergencies (ER visits, hospitalizations)
  • Keep a medication list and emergency plan handy

4 Steps to Avoid Medication Gaps During Holiday Travel

Step 1: Review and Refill Early

  • Check all prescriptions at least 2 weeks before departure.
  • Request early refills if needed—explain your travel plans to your pharmacy or doctor.
  • Ask about 90-day supplies or mail-order options for long trips.
  • Pro tip: Some insurance plans allow vacation overrides for early refills.

Step 2: Pack Smart and Carry a Medication List

  • Use a pill organizer for daily doses.
  • Pack all medications in original labeled bottles (especially for air travel).
  • Bring a complete, up-to-date medication list (names, dosages, prescribing doctors, allergies).
  • Store meds in your carry-on, not checked luggage.

Step 3: Prepare an Emergency Folder

  • Create a travel folder with:
    • Medication list
    • Doctor’s contact info
    • Insurance cards
    • Advance directives
    • Emergency contact numbers
  • Include a brief “ER plan” outlining your loved one’s diagnoses, allergies, and any special needs.
  • Keep digital copies accessible on your phone or email.
  • Your Nurse Advocate’s “Emergency to Go Folder and Guide”

Step 4: Plan for the Unexpected

  • Know the location of nearby pharmacies and urgent care/ER near your destination.
  • Ask your doctor for a paper prescription as a backup.
  • Learn how to get a refill out of state (some chains like Walgreens/CVS can access your records nationwide).
  • Set reminders for time zone changes to avoid missed doses.
  • Always bring a little extra in case of travel or unexpected delays in getting home.

Managing Medications Checklist for Holiday Traveling

  • ✔️ Refilled all prescriptions
  • ✔️ Packed meds in carry-on
  • ✔️ Updated medication list and emergency folder
  • ✔️ Located nearest pharmacy/urgent care at destination
  • ✔️ Backup plan for refills and emergencies
  • ✔️ Address any issues with needing to fill prescriptions early

Final Tips

  • Communicate your travel plans to your healthcare team.
  • Don’t wait until the last minute—pharmacies may be extra busy during the holidays.
