Music therapy is a powerful tool in helping patients with various conditions. Music can help to calm restless hospice patients without the use of medication, while it helps Alzheimer’s patients remember and process information. Studies have shown that music therapy has helped improve quality of life for cancer patients, Parkinson’s disease patients, people who are at risk for developing dementia, as well as children with autism. Music therapy also promotes socialization among elderly adults and offers relief from stress or anxiety. If you want to learn more about how music therapy can benefit your loved ones please read on!
In this interview, we highlight the examples of Board Certified Music Therapist, Karla Wilson. She shares many stories illustrating how music therapy helps manage chronic illnesses. This interview is available for you to hear first-hand her stories.
One story impacted us strongly. It was a woman with Alzheimer’s Disease and for years she could not remember the name of her husband and is bothered her tremendously. Karla assessed her, taking into consideration her age and era of music she may be familiar with. Karla shared that with dementia patient we usually remember the music from our late teens especially around the age of 18. She selected a song back from the 30s and her patient broke down into tears. She explained they were happy tears because she and her husband used to dance to that song and for the first time in years, she now can remember his name! What a gift Karla was able to give to this woman. We were blown away by the power of music therapy!
Another story Karla shared regarding a child with autism, the child was anxious and was breathing very rapidly. She started out with strong beats to mirror the child rate of respirations and when they matched, she gradually slowed down the music and beat and the child’s breathing now mirrored the music and started to slow down. Amazing!
